Starting at the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) in June 2005, I have previously worked for the Computer Resource Center of the Geophysical Institute since November 2000. I have a varied background of voice and data telecommunications, computer maintenance, facilities management, alternative energy and energy conservation and live acoustic sound (music) amplification.

I specialize in helping folks make their workflow efficient, as we all know that computers have that potential, as well as providing security solutions in this day of viruses and spyware. Web pages are a good way to share resources, also an area in which I specialize. Finally, I'm working on establishing a solid network foundation for SFOS facilities.

I'd been developing video capabilities for my department and previous department. I've rendered a few examples to Realplayer, which you can get here if you don't already have it installed.

. Much faster than dialup bandwidth is recommended.

A litte history. I've lived in Fairbanks since 1971, coming from the very different environment of California, once I graduated from UC Berkeley.

I had previously worked on campus in the 1970's, working as the sole telephone rep for FMUS (now ACS-Fairbanks, formerly PTI and Century Tel - try to keep up now...). I've worked telecommunications in Prudhoe Bay, and spent 15 years at Tanana Chiefs Conference (the 650 employee non-profit health and social services organization, serving the 43 Interior Alaska Athabascan villages) running their weatherizaton and housing programs, then maintaining their entire telecommunications portfolio and as facilities manager for the 600,000 sq. ft. of facilities they maintain in Fairbanks.

I've been involved in various community organizations and espouse a long term energy policy in contrast to the U.S. policy of the last 25 years. You can read more about my opinions and philosophy at comity.blogspot.com.

For fun, I hang out with my family, play music (folk, mostly celtic) and maintain the Alaska Folk Music website. I also serve as webmaster for several bands, including two of my own: Celtic Confusion and Gaelic Fusion. Need a band for a party or wedding, email me at gary(at)alaskafolkmusic.org.
