UAF Students in Seward

UAF students studying at the "Seward Campus" are often advised by the UAF faculty at the Alaska SeaLife Center.

Many of the graduate students study marine mammals or fisheries projects and enjoy the ready access to ocean life in Seward.

Seward Marine Center staff often help provide support for these students by offering lab and office space and by providing administrative support for student research activities.

Terril Efird, M.S. Marine Biology
I am comparing the biodiversity and size frequency of fish populations between forests dominated by the canopy forming algae, Nereocystis luetkeana and Druehlia fistulosa(formally Alaria fistulosa). Additionally, I will be comparing communities found in varying size kelp forest, from small patches to those extending miles along shore. My research will be conducted in Alaska's Aleutians Islands and Kachemak Bay.

Jared Guthridge, M.S. Fisheries
Advisor: Nicola Hillgruber
Research: Embryonic development of Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius) in Alaska.

Mandy Keogh , Ph.D. Marine Biology
Advisor: Shannon Atkinson
Research: I am working with several species of pinnipeds studying how endocrine function as altered by body condition, reproductive status, and stress impacts immune function ultimately influencing an individuals health and ability to survive

Sara Whiteside, M.S.c Marine Biology
Advisor: Lara Dehn
Research: "Trophic Links: Forage Fish, Their Prey, and Ice Seals". I will be using stable isotopes and stomach contents to gain a better understanding of forage fishes and their potential as food for ice seals within the Chukchi Sea.
