Sea ice is a unique environment for many different forms of life, ranging from microbes to birds, seals and bears.

Our mission is to contribute to the understanding of the ecological role of this habitat in a changing world..

If you have specific information requests, please contact Rolf Gradinger (rgradinger AT ims.uaf.edu).

Lesson plans we developed regarding sea ice topics can be found at on a NOAA web site.

We conducted research in five different regions/topics of the Arctic:

Fast ice research close to Barrow, Alaska (completed)
Sea ice research in the Canadian Basin as part of Arctic Exploration 2002 and 2005 (NOAA web page)
NEW: Arctic Cod: The big unknown in Arctic marine biology (with movies)
Sea ice research in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas as part of the Shelf-Basin-Interactions-Study
Sea ice: an important seasonal habitat for marine invertebrate juveniles in Arctic fast ice systems?
Sea ice research in Little Diomede and Barrow, Alaska
