Hands-On Learning

Working in the field and with fisheries professionals provides students the opportunity to integrate classroom instruction with ‘real world’ experience. That is why the fisheries students at UAF are required to earn experiential learning credit in their junior or senior years of study.

The internship program at UAF is the most common way that fisheries students will fulfill the experiential learning requirement (FISH 490 [225KB PDF]) for a Bachelor of Arts in Fisheries, or a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries Science.  Freshman and sophomores are also encouraged to sign up to receive internship credit for occupational experience (FISH 290 [187KB PDF]), though it does not fulfill the experiential learning requirement for graduation.

Internships might be summer jobs, part-time positions during the year, and may take place in another city or state.  The focus of an internship is the employment experience, but upper classman who wish to earn additional credit and a letter grade may add an independent study or senior thesis to their internship workload.  This program provides flexibility to students and allows them to take advantage of the diverse opportunities found in Alaska's coastal and Interior communities.
