M.S., Ph.D. in Marine Biology
The Marine Biology graduate program focuses on the ecology, physiology and biochemistry/molecular biology of marine organisms. Students may pursue either a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Marine Biology. Graduate students are afforded excellent opportunities for laboratory and field research through facilities available in Fairbanks, the Kasitsna Bay Laboratory, the Seward Marine Center, the Juneau Center, and the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in Kodiak, or through ship-based research through their advisor's research program.
Students considering graduate study in Marine Biology are strongly encouraged to contact potential faculty advisors prior to applying. This will assist in a more efficient review of their application. Students in Marine Biology have a strong background in biology, ecology, molecular biology or biochemistry. Students are admitted on the basis of their ability and academic preparation, availability of financial support, and the capability of the program to meet their particular interests and needs. Faculty review requests for admission throughout the year. Stipends for financial support are awarded competitively. Most students are supported on research projects that relate directly to their degree research.
Students may select courses offered by the graduate program in marine sciences and limnology, the fisheries program, the biology and wildlife department and the chemistry and biochemistry department.
Degree Requirements
Master's and doctoral students in the Marine Biology degree program require at least one year of residence at the Fairbanks campus, but research may be conducted through other research facilities.
M.S. Marine Biology
- Complete the general university requirements.
- Complete the master’s degree requirements.
- Complete a thesis.
- Complete the following courses:
- MSL 610 Marine Biology (3 credits)
- MSL 615 Physiology of Marine Organisms (3 credits)
- MSL 650 Biological Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 651 Marine Biology and Ecology Field Course, or MSL 656 Kelp Forest Ecology, or equivalent field course at another institution (4 credits)
- MSL 692- Seminar (3 credits).
- Minimum credits required: 30.
Ph.D. Marine Biology
- Complete the general university requirements.
- Complete the Ph.D. degree requirements.
- Complete coursework at least equivalent to that required for the M.S. degree.
- Minimum credits required: 18
