Research Overview
My graduate studies involve assessing the stable isotope turnover rates of carbon and nitrogen for sea ice associated invertebrates in the BEST (Bering Sea Ecosystem Study) project. The focus of my experimental design is to create isotopically distinct ice algae cultures to feed to one pelagic consumer and one benthic consumer. Stable isotope turnover rates will be determined and compared within each species tissues and across species lines. These turnover rates will link these organisms over space and time to the trophic structure of the Bering Sea ecosystem and how they might be affected in the future by the predicted reduction of sea ice due to global climate change.
