Lloyd Lowry Affiliate Associate Professor
Specialty
- biology, ecology, and conservation of Alaskan marine mammals.
Research Overview
One of my primary current activities is serving as Chairman of the Marine Mammal Commission's Committee of Scientific Advisors. I also serve on the National Marine Fishery Service's Alaska Regional Scientific Review Group, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Seal Specialists Group, and the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee.
Much of my research has involved investigations of foraging ecology of Alaskan marine mammals, especially ice-inhabiting seals, belugas, and bowhead whales. I've also worked on describing abundance, distribution, movements, and behavior of marine mammals by using satellite-linked telemetry and aerial surveys. After the Exxon Valdez oil spill I worked on assessing impacts of the spill on harbor seals in Prince William Sound, and monitoring the harbor seal population for signs of recovery. A recent interest is the biology and conservation needs of Hawaiian monk seals.
