Research Overview
My thesis research primarily involves the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and its genetic connectivity within the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. I will be using microsatellite markers, to better determine whether or not distinct subpopulations may or may not exist.
Snow crab undergo a 3-5 month planktonic stage before settling into the benthos, which allows for a great deal of long range larval dispersal. Pressures from climate change, commercial fishing and predator prey interactions may potentially be causing a northward range contraction of this species. In addition, resource exploration and a proposed Arctic Ocean snow crab fishery will inevitably impact this population, making it all the more necessary to determine population structure soon.
