Research Overview
My research is focused on the biology of the spiny dogfish shark in the Gulf of Alaska. Part of that work is to describe seasonal trends in abundance at various locations across the Gulf, including size, sex, age and reproductive stage distributions. I am working on refining aging techniques using image analysis software. The length at age data will be used to compare a variety of growth models, to estimate natural mortality and to complete a demographic analysis. I am also conducting a comprehensive diet study comparing diet composition with season, prey abundance and location. Finally, I am examining historical spiny dogfish catch rates of both commercial and survey fisheries to examine correlations with environmental conditions, gear type, locations, and other species.
