Student Standouts
- Alison Banks, Kelly Newman, Nick Harman, Caroline Jezierski (M.S. Marine Biology) and Seth Danielson (Ph.D. Oceanography) presented their research at the 2007 Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage in January. Kelly Newman’s presentation on how she uses sound to study orca behavior in the Pribilof Islands resulted in an Associated Press article that showed up in several newspapers across the nation.
- Ed Farley (Ph.D. Fisheries) published a paper called “Early marine growth in relation to marine-stage survival rates for Alaska sockeye salmon” in this spring’s NOAA Fishery Bulletin.
- Shawn Harper (M.S. Marine Biology) was appointed to the University of Alaska Scientific Diving Program Diving Control Board as a UAF student representative.
- Dominic Hondolero, an undergraduate intern working with Brenda Konar and Katrin Iken, received a NOAA Hollings Scholarship to conduct research this summer at the Kasitsna Bay Laboratory on the effects of climate change on the Kachemak Bay ecosystem. Dominic is also the lead author on a paper on biodiversity in intertidal communities that will be published this year in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Katy Howard, Sean Rooney, Katie Palof (M.S. Fisheries) and Ashwin Sreenivasan (Ph.D. Fisheries) received new Rasmuson Fisheries Research Center fellowships in 2006. Continuation fellowships were awarded to Alison Banks, Joel Markis, Shannon Hanna, Carrie Parris (M.S. Fisheries), William Bechtol and Cindy Tribuzio (Ph.D. Fisheries).
- Celeste Leroux’s (M.S. Marine Biology) research project on the feeding and nursery requirements of red and blue king crab in a hatchery setting received ongoing state and national news coverage as part of the Alaska King Crab Research and Rehabilitation Program, a partnership between university, federal and state scientists, commercial fishermen, coastal communities and the Alutiiq Pride Shellfish Hatchery in Seward.
- Amit Morey’s (M.S. Seafood Science & Nutrition) research on developing pink salmon jerky was presented by Alexandra de Oliveira at the Joint Trans-Atlantic Fisheries Technology Conference in Quebec City, Canada in November 2006.
- Kyle Schumann (B.S. Fisheries) received a grant from Flint Hills Resources for his project on eulachon life history. Schumann was also featured in the 2006 Chancellor’s Report for his academic and research achievements.
