Heidi Herter

Nome gets first Marine Advisory Program agent

SFOS alumna Heidi Herter has been appointed as the first Marine Advisory Program agent for the Bering Strait Region. Located in Nome, Herter will work with commercial and subsistence fishermen, seafood processors, and others to expand economic opportunities that make use of the region’s cod, halibut, herring, salmon, and crab fisheries. Herter’s position is a new one, and represents a unique partnership between the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation, SFOS, the UAF Northwest Campus and Alaska Sea Grant.

According to Paula Cullenberg, the leader of MAP in Anchorage, the creation of this new position would not have been possible without the support of regional groups like the NSEDC.

Herter graduated this year with a master’s degree in marine biology. As a graduate student, she studied larval ecology and settlement of Dungeness crab in Glacier Bay, Alaska, with her advisor, Ginny Eckert.

The new MAP agent joins 14 other advisory agents located in 10 coastal communities across Alaska. For more information about Heidi Herter and the Marine Advisory Program, please visit http://seagrant.uaf.edu/map.
