Faculty and Staff News
•Amanda Rosenberger taught a field course in western Alaska called the Ellikarrmiut Summer Science Field Camp. At the camp, Rosenbergertaught high school students from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region about fisheries science and techniques.
•At the 2009 American Fisheries Society meeting in Nashville, Joseph Margraf, professor of fisheries, received the Meritorious Service Award for his "loyalty, dedication and service to AFS and for exceptional commitment to AFS programs, objectives and goals." Margraf also led a session and gave a talk on bioelectrical impedance analysis.
•Trent Sutton, associate professor of fisheries, and new assistant professor of fisheries Andrew Seitz co-presented a talk on distance learning at the national AFS meeting in Nashville. Sutton also gave another presentation on "Biotic and abiotic determinants of stocking success for striped bass in inland waters."
•Associate Dean Michael Castellini will be the William S. Hoar Memorial Lecturer for 2009-2010 for the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia. Castellini will speak October 26 in Vancouver on seal diving physiology.
•Murat Balaban, director of the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in Kodiak, presented on information technology applications in seafood harvesting and processing at the University of Alaska TechFest in September.
•Alexandra de Oliveira, associate professor at FITC, was appointed by the Institute of Food Technologists to serve on the organization's sustainability panel. Oliveira also chaired the Trans-Atlantic Fisheries Technology Conference in Denmark in September.

•Stephen Jewett, research professor of marine biology, was part of a team that surveyed Kasatochi Volcano in August. The volcano erupted in August 2008 and provided scientists with an unprecedented opportunity to see how an ecosystem rebuilds itself from the very first species to colonize an area. Jewett's role in the project was to assess the destruction and recovery of the island's nearshore marine communities.
•Chuck Crapo, seafood technology specialist, and Quentin Fong, seafood marketing specialist, both with the Marine Advisory Program in Kodiak, went to Japan and Hong Kong this spring to learn about processing methods and markets for salmon caviar and sea urchin roe by meeting with local product wholesalers and retailers.
•Paula Cullenberg, leader of the Marine Advisory Program, provided an overview of MAP and what it does for the state of Alaska at a recent UA Board of Regents meeting. Cullenberg was also appointed to a new committee organized by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. The committee will look at ways to improve NPFMC's interactions with rural and Alaska Native communities.

Greetings from the Dean
This will be an exciting year for
the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. After adding seven new faculty members last year, five new faculty
will join us this semester and two more after the first of the year. We also begin this semester with more graduate students and the largest incoming class of fisheries undergraduates (20) in our history.
New findings show increased
ocean acidification in Alaska
The same things that make Alaska's marine waters among the
most productive in the world may also make them the most vulnerable to ocean acidification.
According to new findings by a University of Alaska Fairbanks scientist, Alaska's oceans
are becoming increasingly acidic, which could damage Alaska's king crab and salmon fisheries.
Christie takes over Alaska Sea Grant
The University of Alaska Fairbanks has appointed David Christie as the director of the Alaska Sea Grant College Program.
Bristol Bay region welcomes local as new Marine
Advisory Program agent
Bristol Bay, home to Alaska's largest wild commercial salmon fishery, once again has an Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory
Program agent to help fishermen, seafood processors and marketers, and other marine resource users.
Spotlight: Richard H. Carlson Scholarship
Scholarships are increasingly important as our current economy encourages more people to attend and return
to higher education. In times like these, scholarships are vital because for many students scholarships are the
difference between taking two classes or four, filling up their gas tank or buying books, and
they provide stability in otherwise uncertain times.
Mathis didn't graduate with his bachelor's degree saying "I want to be an oceanographer," but he did say "I want an adventure."

never expected to be a voice for the effects of climate change on Alaska waters.
Atkinson takes the helm at the Fisheries Division
Shannon Atkinson is the new interim director of the UAF Fisheries Division, headquartered in Juneau.
Atkinson took the helm from Bill Smoker, after he retired this summer.

AOOS launches Prince William Sound Field Experiment
This summer, the Alaska Ocean Observing System conducted high-tech, high-speed field experiments in Prince William Sound
to collect data and evaluate models that predict wind, waves, ocean circulation, and oil spill trajectories.
