Generosity's ripple effect

by Teresa Thompson, SFOS Development Officer

Giving to the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences not only helps students, but also contributes to their success, creating a ripple effect. Your gift helps support students who later graduate, many of whom stay in Alaska, join the workforce with a valuable degree and work to sustain and protect the natural resources that benefit our state, the nation and the world.

Kevin Fraley is one of our scholarship recipients. He is a freshman in our newly revised undergraduate fisheries program, and has chosen fisheries as his career. Kevin may not have been financially able to attend UAF, but because he received a UAF scholarship and some additional funding from his community, he is now enrolled in our program. He is excited to be here and plans to begin his career here in Alaska.

Kevin is a student any university would be proud to have. He was an exceptional student in high school who also played an active role in his community. When asked about his choice of careers, Kevin says, "I wouldn't be happy doing anything else. It also makes me feel good to know that I'm contributing to the health and good management of the fish populations that I love."

Read more about Kevin in this Featured-student article.

Giving to SFOS helps students reach their goals, reduces student debt and get qualified professionals out in the fisheries industry. Kevin's story is one of many SFOS success stories. Please join us in the tradition of giving and watch the ripples expand.
