In his own words:
"This photo was taken prior to the Sitka Pacific herring fishery in 2007. The boat is doing a test set. During test sets samples of fish are taken to processors to check the roe-to-body weight ratio. In Sitka, the primary product from the fishery is herring roe, which is sold in Japan."
"The fishermen wait until the ratio is good (when the herring have lots of eggs) before starting to fish, to optimize the price. This fishery is one of the few remaining derby fisheries in Alaska."
"I was there for work I did for my M.S. degree, although I am continuing to work with Sitka herring for my Ph.D."
Peter-John Hulson is working on his Ph.D. with Terry Quinn in Juneau.
