UAF says goodbye to the Alpha Helix
The research vessel Alpha Helix was sold in July to Stabbert Maritime of Seattle. The vessel departed Seward on July 25.
The 133-foot Alpha Helix was designed by The Glosten Associates, the same marine architectural firm designing the Alaska Region Research Vessel. The Alpha Helix was launched in 1965 and originally operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. UAF acquired the vessel in 1980 and operated it until 2004.
