NOSB finals a resounding success

SFOS—Top-notch high school students from around the nation gathered in Seward at the end of April for the finals of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. It was the first time in the eleven-year history of the NOSB competition that the finals were held in Alaska. The students enjoyed a long weekend of adventure and tough competition.

SFOS—Several SFOS faculty and students are currently in the Bering Sea, on board the USCG icebreaker Healy as part of the Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Program/Bering Ecosystem Study. The cruise began March 29 and will continue until May 6.
Research center awards $500,000 to marine, fisheries scientists

SFOS—The Pollock Conservation Cooperative Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has funded more than $500,000 for the study of Alaska’s marine ecosystems.
On thin ice: Marine mammals challenged by climate change

SFOS—Changes in the sea ice at the north and south poles have an immediate effect on the animals that live there. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Mike Castellini will describe how disappearing sea ice affects the breeding, hunting, resting and social systems of polar bears, seals, penguins and more in his lecture, "On Thin Ice: Marine Mammals Challenged by Climate Change." The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the Westmark Gold Room and all ages are welcome to attend the free event.
