Application Process
Eligibility: Applicants for fellowship must be US citizens or permanent residents and must be seeking a PhD degree. Other UAF degree students may participate in the program without MESAS fellowship support. Indicate your intentions and eligibility on the application form.
Deadline: Target date for submission of all documents is February 15 for the following academic year. Later applications will be considered on a space available basis.
- Step 1. Review this MESAS website to determine if the theme of this program matches with your educational interests and goals.
- This program requires interdisciplinary study and research. A student must be committed to interdisciplinary activities. Review the MESAS grant proposal for a more detailed discussion of research themes and cutting-edge topics that MESAS faculty are distinctively poised to assist candidates in addressing.
- Step 2. Contact one of the MESAS faculty or other UAF faculty with interests pertaining to MESAS. Send the faculty member a letter of interest and cc: mesas@uaf.edu.
- Correspond with faculty who share research interests similar to yours and who might serve as a graduate advisor. See the list of MESAS FACULTY.
- Step 3. Apply for UAF graduate admission in the supporting faculty member’s department.
- All applicants to MESAS must also apply for graduate admission to the academic department in which their chosen faculty advisor is housed. See links to the various UAF departments to which you might apply under FACULTY or PhD program.
- Step 4. Submit the following to the MESAS program office (mesas@uaf.edu) once a faculty member agrees to sponsor your application for an IGERT traineeship.
- 1) application form in electronic form (MS Word or pdf) with a brief statement (1000 word maximum) explaining why you want to participate in MESAS, your qualifications for interdisciplinary study, and how your research will relate to MESAS;
- 2) resume in electronic form (MS Word or pdf);
- 3) a letter from your prospective advisor supporting your application to the MESAS program. This should come directly from the faculty member in electronic form (MS Word or pdf).
NOTE: UAF is committed to diversity. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
