Service

Service to the public, including industry members, agencies, small businesses and fishermen is a major role of the faculty at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center. Each month, faculty public service ranges from technical assistance and consultations in marketing and seafood processing, to serving on federal or state advisory committees, to meeting with K-12 school students to talk about food science, harmful algal blooms or marine mammal biology.

Some recent examples of KSMSC public service include:

  • Providing technical assistance to seafood processors around the state and the U.S.
  • Offering laboratory analysis of seafood samples for seafood processing plants
  • Consulting with an Alaska Native group about the potential for sea cucumber aquaculture in Kodiak
  • Training workshops for fishermen in marine safety, gear technology and regulatory process
