Northwest Arctic Career and Technical Education Center (NACTEC) Field Biology
Bristol Bay Salmon Camp is held in July in Dillingham and Aleknagik. Middle School and High School students from throughout Bristol Bay are encouraged to apply. Students selected to attend the camp will spend time with fisheries biologists and other experts, working outdoors in field settings to observe salmon in their natural environment.
The Ellkarmiut Summer Science Field Camp is one of the programs offered by KuC's Science and Technology Academy, to encourage Y-K Delta high school juniors and seniors to consider education and careers in Science and Technology. The camp is located in a remarkable wilderness environment on the shores of the Bering Sea. The camp provides a learning environment that is hands-on and adventure based.
A course in Field Biology will be taught by Heidi Herter (UAF Marine Advisory Program) and Claudia Ihl (UAF Northwest Campus) August 11-16 at Salmon Lake camp on the Seward Peninsula. In this class, students will learn some of the techniques that are employed by wildlife biologists to study plants, fish, and animals in the field. Students will also design and complete their own research project with a partner. This course is offered through the Northwest Arctic Career and Technical Education Center (session 15) and is available to high school students in the Bering Strait and Nome City School Districts. Students will earn credit through both UAF and BSSD (dual credit not available for Nome students). Apply online at: http://nactec.bssd.org/index.php or contact heidi.herter@uaf.edu for more information.
