INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY— INTENSIVE SURVEY ANALYSIS AND PRESENTATION

Internship opportunities are available for five Alaskan university students or recent graduates, either at undergraduate or graduate level.

Approximately 10 hours/week for a 3-week intensive, beginning approximately April 5, 2013.

The Alaska Salmon Initiative is a significant feasibility study for a potential future organization in Alaska that would work to connect Alaskans from diverse backgrounds to sustain the economic, cultural, social and ecological values of wild salmon in our state.

ASI is currently fielding a statewide survey, with regional samples in each of the following regions:

  • Southeast Alaska and the Prince William Sound region

  • Southwest Alaska, from Kodiak to Dillingham

  • The Cook Inlet region

  • The Interior/Yukon-Koyukuk region, including Fairbanks

  • The Northern/Arctic region

Survey area boundaries are based on U.S. Census regions.

ASI is seeking a survey analysis assistant from each of the five study areas. Interns will conduct data analysis for their home region and work together to compare data for the state as a whole. Interns will work with the assistance and mentorship of professionals from an expert public opinion research firm.

    Requirements for Candidates

  • Candidates must be highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals able to recognize and seize an opportunity, do good work, and deliver excellent results with minimal supervision.

  • Candidates must have excellent written communication skills, and must be able to prepare written documents for presentation with minimal need for editing.

  • Candidates must be able to attend formal and informal work sessions with the other interns in person in the Anchorage area, approximately 2 nights per week during the research period.

  • Candidates should be currently studying at the University of Alaska Anchorage or Alaska Pacific University or have graduated from a 4-year college or university in the last year.

  • Candidates should have prior experience summarizing research for oral and written presentation.

  • Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in cultural, social, political, economic or anthropological studies.

  • Personal or academic experience with Alaska’s salmon or other fishery resources is preferred.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Interns will participate in a major goal-setting session with the public opinion research firm.

  • Interns will work independently and in a group during the 3-week data analysis period, preparing findings from their home region and collaborating with others on statewide findings. Interns should work together at least twice per week during the study period.

  • Interns will prepare written findings and supporting presentations. Formats for presentation may include PowerPoint, audio/video or other media. Findings will be provided to the public opinion research contractor and representatives of the client (ASI).

  • Interns will be expected to adhere to professional standards of confidentiality.

    Additional Opportunities

• Depending on intern performance and other factors related to ASI’s feasibility investigation, participants may have the opportunity to assist in presenting research findings to future meetings of leading Alaskans, ASI advisory board members, groups in their home region, or other civic or cultural organizations.

Interested Candidates should submit a cover letter, a writing sample, and a resumé outlining their interest and qualifications in PDF format to Erin Harrington at erin@doryassociates.com. Application packets should be submitted no later than 5pm on Wednesday, March 20th 2013.
