Degree Programs in Fisheries and Marine Science
Bachelor's Degrees
Alaska Pacific University (Anchorage)
APU emphasizes field intensive, outdoor classes, which are offered three times a year. These classes are a great opportunity to investigate the Alaska coastline and also explore other marine habitats in places such as the Florida Keys and Galápagos Islands. In the Marine Biology Program, students gain expertise in the biological sciences specifically as applied to marine environments. The B.A. degree provides fundamental studies in Marine Biology. The B.S. degree requires additional coursework in the physical and natural sciences while maintaining the traditional liberal arts focus on active learning and project-based experiences. This degree is also excellent preparation for students who want to enter graduate school or who intend to work professionally in the field of marine biology. Check out the degree requirements for a look at some of the classes offered.
University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA)
UAA's Department of Biological Sciences offers a BS in the Natural Sciences and both a BA and a BS in Biological Sciences. Students in these majors can continue their studies in various programs. These include (but are not limited to) the Master of Science (MS) in Biological Sciences at UAA, an MS in Fisheries at UAF, an MS in Marine Biology at UAF, an MS in Oceanography at UAF, and an MS in Seafood Science and Nutrition at UAF. Please ask questions or leave comments in this thread!
University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences (UAF SFOS)
Students can get a BA or a BS in Fisheries or a Minor in Fisheries at the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS). Both degrees will prepare a student to work as professionals in fisheries management, research, conservation, education, policy, harvest and marketing organizations. The core requirements for a BS in Fisheries involve more natural sciences while BA in Fisheries centers more on the social sciences. One of the greatest aspects of these degrees is that students can begin their coursework at any of the University of Alaska campus, and complete their degree in Fairbanks or Juneau! This flexibility aims to encourage students to take advantage of the diverse opportunities found in Alaska’s coastal and Interior communities. Please post comments and questions in this thread! Also, interested candidates can call (907) 474-7289 for more information from SFOS.
University of Alaska Southeast (Juneau)
UAS offers a BA and a BS in Biology. A BS in Marine Biology is also offered. These programs share permanent faculty with specialties in marine ecology, behavioral ecology, marine mammalogy, marine pollution, crustacean physiology, and marine phycology. Students can also get a BA/BS in Fisheries through UAF's "Two-Plus-Two" program. Post your questions and comments on this thread!
