Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center

Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center works with the fishing and seafood industries to develop new solutions to industry's problems. We direct our efforts in five areas: seafood harvesting technology, seafood processing technology, seafood quality and safety, contaminants, and collaborative ecosystems research.

The mission of the UAF Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center is to increase the value of Alaska's fishing industry and marine resources through research, technological development, education and service.

March 29 – Seafood Scientist Chuck Crapo Retiring: this week at SFOS 3/29/13
Professor Chuck Crapo is retiring this month from the University of Alaska Fairbanks after 30 years of service, teaching, and research in the field of seafood science. [Learn more]

April 10 – Institute of Food Technologists recognizes Oliveira's expertise
Associate Professor Alex Oliveira has successfully earned the designation of Certified Food Scientist from the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), an international organization that advocates for a safe and abundant food supply for the world. [Learn more]

September – Smoking Fish for Fun and Profit – Kodiak, Alaska
This 3-day workshop offers lectures and hands-on activities led by seafood scientists at UAF's Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center. Topics include the principles of fish smoking, safety of smoked products, preparation of fish sausage, pink salmon sausage, cold-smoked sockeye and hot-smoked coho. September 26-28 – Arctic AAS Science Conference – Kodiak, Alaska
Concern about the future of Alaska's marine resources, particularly the fisheries, revolve around the status of research and education and our ability to wisely utilize this cornucopia. The 2013 Arctic Science Conference will feature a variety of sessions focusing on marine science, sustainability, circumpolar health, and interdisciplinary education. [Learn more]

April 2014 – Second Kodiak Area Marine Science Symposium
The Kodiak Area Marine Science Symposium (KAMSS) will present selected results of marine research conducted near Kodiak, Alaska, to fishermen, students, and residents of Kodiak Island. At KAMSS, researchers will have an opportunity to talk about their research and local people will learn how Kodiak's marine environment and resources function, change, and affect their lives and livelihoods.
