Frequently Asked Questions

Project Hints

  • Check out the recommended studies linked to the CMI website. These are studies of particular interest.
  • Projects must address a CMI Framework Issue but do not have to be from the recommended study plans.
  • CMI is particularly interested in studies that can be used for management decisions such as supporting NEPA processes or lease discussions.
  • Non-UA researchers can collaborate with UA faculty and staff but cannot propose independently.

Proposal Hints

  • The CMI Director does not need to sign your proposal
  • Official match letters are not required in the initial proposal. However, identification of likely or committed match sources may strengthen review.
  • Clearly identify the Framework Issue being addressed and how the project information will be useful for management practices.
  • Make sure to consider permitting issues for your project.

Budget Hints

  • Keep in mind competition is for $750,000 in total available funds.
  • Clearly identify grant and match sides of the budget and ensure match is 1:1.
  • Budget for travel to present at Annual Reviews in Fairbanks.
  • Ensure match can be spent during CMI award period of performance.

Planning Hints

  • Plan for data archiving appropriate to the information your project will generate.
  • Plan to submit a draft a final report 6 months before contract end date.
  • Contact CMI if planning a field season in summer 2009

Timeline Hints

  • Make sure the budget and project time lines match.
  • Plan to submit a draft a final report 6 months before contract end date.
  • Do not plan on project extensions, propose a workable timeline!

Can non-UA researchers apply?

Yes, but at least one PI must be UA faculty or staff. Staff applications are subject to their department approval to act as PI.

Can we only propose the recommended projects?

No, any project that addresses a CMI Framework Issues will be considered. Recommended projects are identified as high interest but are not guaranteed to be funded.

When will awards be made?

Final competitors will be chosen in early December 2008, final decisions will be made mid-January 2009.

When can successful projects begin?

Funds should be available late spring but projects highly dependent upon particular timelines should be discussed with the CMI Director or Program Manager.

What is match?

Match is money or quantifiable services brought to the project by the proposers and/or their collaborators.

How much is the match requirement?

CMI requires dollar for dollar match.

What can I use as match?

Match can include unrecovered facilities and administration costs, salaries, privately funded complementary projects, in-kind services, and cash contributions. Contact the CMI Program Manager or your Sponsored Programs personnel for assistance.
