Graduate Program Application Instructions
Please carefully read these directions before submitting application materials. These instructions are for applying to the graduate program in marine biology or oceanography. These are different from the instructions for applying to the graduate program in fisheries.
Instructions
Please note that this information is different from the directions attached to the Graduate Application form. Following the instructions given here will allow prompt processing of the application. You can also apply online.
1. Graduate Application for Admission
This completed form should be sent to the UAF admissions office at the address given below.
2. Application Fee
The applicant must enclose a $50.00 application fee with the Graduate Application for Admission. Checks should be made payable to the University of Alaska.
3. Transcripts
The applicant is responsible for requesting that official transcripts from each college or university attended be sent to the Director of Admissions and Records.
4. Graduate Record Examination
Graduate Record Examination Test scores are required. Again, official copies should be sent to the Director of Admissions, and a photocopy sent to the Graduate Program in Marine Sciences and Limnology. The Advanced/Subject test scores are recommended but not required. For information on examination schedules and fees, contact Graduate Record Examinations, CN 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000.
5. Letters of Recommendation
The applicant is responsible for requesting at least three personal evaluations from persons, preferably faculty or research scientists, capable of speaking with authority about his/her ability to undertake graduate study and research. The evaluation forms or letters addressing the same areas should be sent to the Office of Admissions. This form is available on our forms page.
6. Statement of Purpose
Include in the upper right hand corner your name and address. Write a carefully constructed discussion of your academic preparation and goals, indicating how graduate work fits into those goals. This statement will give the department admissions committee an opportunity to learn several important things about you, namely: (a) your preparation and background for the program for which you are applying and the special emphasis you hope to pursue in it, (b) your professional goals and reasons for your choice of career, (c) your particular academic reasons for applying to the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and (d) any special circumstances you wish the department to consider. Your application cannot be reviewed unless this statement is received. If an applicant's interests are clearly outside the Graduate Program's capabilities, we will forward the application to applicable programs at the University of Alaska for consideration. This statement should be sent to the Office of Admissions.
7. Foreign Applicants Only
All international students are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) unless English is the primary language of your country. A minimum score of 550 is required for admission. The Supplemental Information Form and Financial Statement must also accompany the application. These forms should be sent directly to the address below for Admissions and Records. Foreign applications may be submitted anytime, but should be received at least 6 months before the beginning of the semester desired for enrollment, owing to INS processing times.
