Dr. H. Richard Carlson Scholarship

The Dr. H. Richard Carlson Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding graduate student for the 2008-2009 academic year. Shirley Carlson established this scholarship in honor of her late husband, Dr. H. Richard Carlson.  Dr. Carlson made substantial and important contributions to fisheries science in Alaska as a scientist at NOAA Fisheries Auke Bay Laboratory.  In addition, he gave support and encouragement to UA fisheries students.
Award Amount: $5688.00–University expenses only
Due Date: June 15, 2009
Dates of Award: September 2009 ($2844.00) and January 2010 ($2844.00) automatically credited to student’s University account.
Eligibility:  Applicants must be full-time UAF Fisheries graduate students, in good standing, conducting fisheries biology research at the Fisheries Division in Juneau.  Applicants must be Alaska residents and demonstrate motivation and academic and leadership potential.  Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

**Successful recipient must be enrolled full time during the term of the award (nine credits each fall & spring semesters  - no audits.)

1. Current transcripts (unofficial copies are accepted)

2. Personal statement that includes how the student meets the eligibility requirements and describes financial need (i.e. employment and other financial aid student is receiving).

AFSC Population Dynamics Fellowship

To support the training of M.S. and PhD. students in quantitative fisheries science, including population dynamics, management, and stock assessment. Provided by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) of the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Award Amount: $72000 available each year. Provides for full funding for about 3 students/year, including salary and tuition.
Eligibility: Open to students and applicants with solid quantitative ability and achievement. Applications are evaluated by a committee of AFSC and SFOS quantitative scientists. Funding dependent on fund availability.

Dieter Family Marine Science Research Scholarship

To support research by a marine sciences graduate student, with preference for students working at the Seward Marine Center or the Alaska SeaLife Center. E.R. “Dolly” Dieter worked for the UAF Institute of Marine Science from 1962 until 1997. She established this scholarship to help with the growth and development of oceanography at UAF.
Award amount: $500 to $1000 per year.

Francis “Bud” Fay Memorial Scholarship

To support graduate students in marine biology, who are conducting research on marine mammals. Bud Fay was known to all whose lives he touched as a warm, caring, generous individual, a man of great integrity who was intensely interested and passionately involved in his scientific pursuits. He was recognized internationally as the world’s leading expert on the walrus.
Award amount: $1000 per year.

Howard Feder And David Shaw Graduate Student Support Fund

To support graduate students in oceanography or marine biology. Alyeska Pipeline Service Company established this support fund to honor the contributions that Drs. Howard Feder and David Shaw have made to environmental monitoring in Port Valdez. Both Drs. Feder and Shaw are professors emeriti of the Institute of Marine Science at UAF.
Award amount: $1500/year.
How to apply: Requests for proposals will be announced in January. Proposals and letters of support should be submitted to Christina Neumann, neumann@sfos.uaf.edu.
Review process: IMS Director will review and choose recipient.

Ken Turner Memorial Fellowship

To support graduate students in the marine sciences. Ken Turner was a captain of the R/V Acona, the first research vessel of the Institute of Marine Science. This fund was established in his memory by the faculty and staff of IMS.
Award amount: $1000-$2000/year.

NFI/Sea Grant Fellowship

Provides stipend and tuition for a graduate student working on marine fisheries research. Provided by the National Fishing Institute and the Alaska Sea Grant College Program.

Rasmuson Fisheries Research Center

To support graduate students in Fisheries, Marine Biology, or Oceanography who are conducting research related to Alaska's fisheries. The Rasmuson Fisheries Research Center was founded in 1994 by the late Elmer E. Rasmuson, with a million dollar endowment, and has grown through his subsequent contributions and a $100,000 gift from Ward’s Cove Packing Company. Approximately eight fellowships are awarded annually including renewals. Award amount: ranges from $17,500 (beginning Masters) to $22,000 (senior Ph.D.) plus tuition.

Teaching Assistantships

GPMSL awards 3-4 teaching assistantships per semester, and the Fisheries Program has 2 teaching assistantships available.
Award amount: Ranges from $17,500 (beginning Masters) to $22,000 (senior Ph.D.) plus tuition.
