Graduate Program in Oceanography
Oceanography Degree Requirements
The oceanography program offers concentrations in biological, chemical, fisheries, geological, and physical oceanography.
Masters and doctoral students in the oceanography degree programs require at least one year of residence at the Fairbanks campus, but research may be conducted through the Juneau Center and other coastal facilities.
Oceanography M.S.
Complete the general university requirements.
Complete the master’s degree requirements.
Select one of the following concentrations:
- biological
- chemical
- fisheries
- geological
- physical.
The concentration area is chosen based on the research topic and the courses completed in addition to those required for all Masters.
Students with a concentration in biological, chemical, geological, or physical oceanography must complete the following courses:
- MSL 620-Physical Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 630-Geological Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 650-Biological Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 660-Chemical Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 692-Seminar (3 credits)
- MSL 699-Thesis (open)
- Electives (open)
Students with a concentration in fisheries oceanography must complete the following courses:
- MSL 620-Physical Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 630-Geological Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 650-Biological Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 660-Chemical Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 540- Fisheries Oceanography (3 credits)
- MSL 692-Seminar (3 credits)
- MSL 699-Thesis (open)
- Electives (open)
Minimum credits required: 30.
Oceanography Ph.D.
Complete the general university requirements.
Complete the Ph.D. degree requirements.
Complete coursework equivalent to M.S. degree.
Minimum credits required: 18.
