Graduate Program in Fisheries
Graduate Fisheries Course of Study
With research locations throughout the state, students spend most of their time on the same campus as their research advisor in Fairbanks or at the Juneau Center on the University of Alaska Southeast campus. Interior Alaska aquatic habitats are easily accessible for study from Fairbanks. Marine and freshwater studies in fisheries and fish biology can be pursued at the Juneau Center, near the Auke Bay National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Laboratory with its large staff of research scientists. Faculty and students often work with NMFS and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Facilities include computer labs and freshwater and seawater wet labs.
Faculty and graduate student research topics
- Variation in mitochondrial DNA in relation to population identification of Alaska salmon
- Feeding habits of larval walleye pollock in the Bering Sea
- Effect of the Exxon Valdez oil spill on subtidal and intertidal algal, invertebrate, and fish communities
- Mariculture of the red alga Porphyra
- King crab behavior relative to the pot fishery in southeast Alaska
- Effects of jet boat turbulence on salmonid reproduction
- Assessment of the risk of regulatory decisions to manage Alaska freshwater sport fisheries
- Approaches to exploitation control and population-size thresholds for fisheries resource management
- Fisheries oceanography and species diversity of fishes of the northeastern Chukchi Sea
- Quantitative genetic analysis of salmon growth and development
- Ecology of flatfish and characteristics of flatfish nursery grounds
