MSL F692AF—Sem: Fisheries Oceanography

Details

Department: Marine Science and Limnology (MSL)
Course Number: MSL F692AF
Credits: 2.0
Grading Type: Pass/Fail

The format of the course: Each student will be responsible for leading at least one class session. During the first two classes we will set up a schedule for student presentations. The student is free to choose the topic, which might often be her/his thesis topic. It is preferable that the student discuss the topic with Dr. Norcross prior to preparation. The student who is responsible for the seminar will choose the topic and readings and post them on Blackboard no less than 8 days prior to the start of class. Reading assignments are not limited to a single paper per topic. It is often a good idea to assign different readings to various students (all of which the presenter has read). Having participants with diverse backgrounds can often create lively and informative discussions. Each person will also make a PowerPoint presentation and conduct a discussion of the topic. PowerPoint presentations must be posted on Blackboard 3 days prior to class, i.e., the preceding Friday. Many people travel and do not have access to Blackboard the day of class. Class will not be held on Monday 22 September as Norcross will be in Seattle at a North Pacific Fisheries Management Council Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands Groundfish Plan Team meeting. Unfortunately because one of Norcross’s NPRB projects is being presented by a former student (Paige Drobny) from 1600-1730 hrs PDT that day, she will not even be able to participate via phone from Seattle. Therefore, the first student presentation will be 29 September. Prior to our first class meeting on 8 September, I will enroll all registered students on Blackboard and I will post assignments, including introductory reading for class on 8 September. Please check Blackboard for the latest in login and class registration information. Please send me (norcross@ims.uaf.edu) an email (cc: neumann@sfos.uaf.edu) from the email address that you normally check and to which you will respond and tell me that you have registered. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email.

Description

The topic of this seminar is “Arctic fishes”. Though it is a Fisheries Oceanography seminar, the species to be studied are not limited to marine fishes. Anadromous fishes and freshwater fishes may also be included. Because it is a Fisheries Oceanography class, some inclusion of ecology or oceanography is required, e.g., the topic can be about physiology adaption of a fish to cold temperatures, but the effect on the life history, seasonal distribution, or similar ecological considerations must be included. In the course, students will learn about diverse types of fish species and adaptations to the Arctic. Participants in the course will also learn to choose, focus and organize a topic, as well as presentation and discussion-directing skills. The class is designed for 2 credits and scheduled for one 2-hour session Mondays 3:40-5:40 PM. However, because of Dr. Norcross’ travel schedule in Fall 2008, class will not be held ALL Mondays during the semester. To make up these regular class meeting times, virtual class meetings will be held via required Blackboard Discussion groups. Our first class meeting will be Monday, September 8th, and the second class on September 15th. The first class will discuss potential topics for the course and the general topic of “Arctic fishes”. Dr. Norcross will lead the second class on September 15th following the general format required of students.
