SFOS Website Philosophy
The purpose of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) website is to broaden recognition and to achieve the strategic aims of the school as expressed in the SFOS mission statement. As an official University site, the SFOS website will strive to maintain an informative, high-quality, professional, and visually appealing presence. The website will be used to recruit quality graduate and undergraduate students; highlight the work of SFOS faculty, staff, and students; inform visitors about fisheries and ocean science; provide community outreach; serve as a repository for the work of faculty and staff; and serve as an administrative tool for SFOS and the University of Alaska system.
To fulfill this mission, we will follow the guidelines below:
- We will strive for a clean, functional site design.
- We will enable all visitors to navigate the website easily and effectively by providing consistent navigation and logically defined content areas, with pages optimized for download speed and accessibility.
- Updates will be made on a frequent and timely basis in order to maintain credibility as a source of information for potential and current students, faculty, staff and other audiences.
- We will strive to achieve an integrated, professional and attractive public image.
- All proposed graphics will be reviewed and carefully judged for their load-time/benefit ratios.
- We will not add features or complexity unless the benefit exceeds the extra loading time.
- We will not attempt to probe visitors’ computers or pry into individual identities.
- We will maintain and protect the SFOS web server to address data confidentiality and privacy concerns.
