Greetings
Alaska has vast ocean resources including more than half of the nation’s coastline, three-quarters of the continental shelf and the largest fishery in the world. What better place to study fisheries and ocean sciences.
The UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences is a community of scholars that provides opportunities for students and faculty to learn and conduct research in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Our faculty are dedicated to providing students a high quality education through outstanding teaching. We enable our graduate students to participate in frontier research in Alaskan coastal waters, in the Arctic region, and around the world. From our web site, you will learn of the diverse research approaches and the variety of our research endeavors.
Divisions of our school are found in many locations throughout Alaska including our Fisheries faculty in Juneau, Oceanography and Marine Biology faculty in Fairbanks, Seafood Technology faculty in Kodiak, and Marine Advisory Program faculty at nine locations around Alaska. We operate the Research Vessel Alpha Helix out of Seward where several of our marine biology faculty conduct marine mammal and avian research as the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Over 60 Ph.D. level faculty work at the varied locations of the school and 140 graduate students are engaged in thesis research in Alaska waters and throughout the world. From first year students to distinguished Professors, we work together to create knowledge of the ocean and its fisheries and apply this knowledge to solve problems for the State of Alaska and the nation.
Climate change is having a major impact on the oceans, fisheries, and marine mammals in the Arctic. Our faculty and students are studying these changes to understand their potential impacts on the ocean, its living resources, and upon the native Alaskans who depend on subsistence from Alaska's bountiful coastal waters.
Come to Alaska for a quality education in fisheries and ocean sciences. Stay for the adventure in living in one of the most pristine, picturesque places on Earth.
